Hong Kong, 12 June 2022 – In commemoration of the 124th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong held a simple yet meaningful flag-raising ceremony and wreath-laying activity at the Consulate’s public area.

The ceremony was followed by the online Kapangyawan Friendship Festival which was streamed through the Consulate’s official Facebook page. The virtual event featured Independence Day messages of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., Secretary of Social Welfare and Development Rolando Joselito D. Bautista, Secretary of Trade and Industry, read by Vice Consul (Commercial) Atty. Roberto B. Mabalot, Jr., Secretary of Labor and Employment Silvestre Bello III read by Labor Attaché Melchor B. Dizon, and SSS President and CEO Michael Regino read by SSS Representative to Hong Kong, Mr. Lester Paul Mata.

In his remarks, Consul General Raly L. Tejada emphasized to carry in our hearts the spirit of heroism as we rise towards the challenges of a new beginning. He also lauded the Filipino community for their active participation and determination during the national elections. CG Tejada assured the community of the Consulate’s commitment to improve its systems and serve with the highest level of dedication and professionalism. He encouraged fellow Filipinos in Hong Kong to continue supporting the fight against Covid-19 by following health protocols established by the Hong Kong government and get vaccinated if and when possible.

The online celebration also featured a special segment on the 75th Year Anniversary on the establishment of the Consulate. Former PH Consuls General in Hong Kong took part by giving out special messages and sharing stories during their tour of duty. Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam also delivered a congratulatory message and expressed her appreciation and gratitude to Filipino Domestic Helpers (FDH) working in Hong Kong. CE Lam recognized the significant economic and social contributions of FDHs over the years to the numerous families citywide. She also acknowledged the unwavering support and cooperation of the Consulate and FDHs in helping the Hong Kong government to curb the virus transmission in the society by following its anti-epidemic efforts.

The online celebration showcased exceptional performances from Filipino Artists and various Filipino Community Organizations in Hong Kong. The Online Kapangyawan Friendship Festival is a project of the Consulate in partnership with The Filipino Channel (TFC).
