Hong Kong, 21 January 2024 — The Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong through its Civil Registry and Legal Section hosted a talk about parental support under the Consulate’s latest public service program entitled, “PCG Talks”, the first edition of which talked about Parent Support in the Philippines and in Hong Kong, China last 21 January 2024 at the PCG Conference Room.
 
The program served as a golden opportunity for forty-five (45) participants to be enlightened on matters concerning common parental responsibility to provide support for their children under the Philippine and Hong Kong laws.
 
In her opening remarks, Consul General Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan encouraged the participants to take advantage of the insights to be shared by the resource speakers concerning their responsibilities as parents and their children’s right to parental support.
 
Hong Kong-based Filipina solicitor, Atty. Jaerey Velasco, a Partner at Payne Clermont Velasco, discussed Hong Kong’s law particularly focusing on how a mother can obtain financial child support from the father in Hong Kong.
 
The discussion on the Philippine Law on Parental Support was led by Dean Soledad Deriquito-Mawis, Dean of the Lyceum of the Philippines - College of Law, supported by Atty. Andrea Yasay, a Senior Associate at Mawis Law Firm. Dean Mawis shared her expertise on Philippine family law, covering legal remedies for a parent seeking parental support of a common child, and liabilities of a parent who reneged on such obligation.
 
All panelists were also able to assist members of the audience during the question-and-answer portion of the program, specifically aiding on queries relating to a long-overdued demand for support, parental custody in cases of unmarried parents, and the legal processes involving impugnment of paternity of a legitimate child born in a valid marriage.
 
The discussion was synthesized by Vice Consul Allan G. Revote, the head of the Civil Registry and Legal Section.
 
In addition to the panelists, Consul Paulo V. Saret, head of the Assistance-To-Nationals Section of the Consulate, shared additional insights on the Philippine government’s efforts to provide assistance to Filipino nationals dealing with the same issues.
