Hong Kong, 29 January 2024 — To show recognition and appreciation for their invaluable service and contribution to the local households in Hong Kong, more than 4,000 Foreign Domestic Helpers (FDHs) were treated to a spectacular day of music and magic at Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL), otherwise known as “the happiest place on Earth”. The Li Ka Shing Foundation, in partnership with the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, subsidized the park tickets for the valued guests for a whole day of fun and leisure at the renowned theme park last 7 and 14 January 2024.
In addition to the free park tickets, HKDL also organized exclusive performances of the live musical production of the Festival of the Lion King. The audience were captivated by an array of nostalgic songs, graceful dances, breathtaking acrobatics, amazing visuals, and the interactive components of the show. Consul General Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan graced the occasion and was joined by Mr. Michael Moriarty, Managing Director of HKDL, as they welcomed and paid tribute to the special guests of the day, the Foreign Domestic Helpers.
In her speech, Consul General Aguilar-Usudan highlighted the important contribution of FDHs to Hong Kong society, especially to women who were given the opportunity to pursue their careers and be productive members of the Hong Kong workforce, because of the services of FDHs. There are 199,000 Filipino FDHs in HK. A study in 2019 revealed that FDHs contributed HKD98.9 billion to the City’s economy, making 3.6% of HK’s GDP.
HKDL is celebrated for its active advocacies on diversity, inclusivity and equal opportunities, with Filipino cast members comprising the second largest part of the Disney family. Li Ka Shing Foundation is a Hong Kong-based charitable organization founded in 1980 by HK entrepreneur Li Ka Shing. Mr. Li invested over HKD30 billion in projects covering education, medical services, charity, and anti-poverty programmes.
