The Philippine Consulate General participated on Friday, 26 January 2018 in a tour and briefing extended by Ming Pao, Hong Kong’s leading Chinese-language newspaper, to representatives of consular missions of six ASEAN member-states based in Hong Kong.
Co-CEO Joseph Yii made a presentation on the paper’s history and business while Chief Editor Leung Heung Nam explained the workings of the editorial policy to the consuls general of Malaysia, which organized the event, Laos and Singapore as well as Philippine Deputy Consul General Roderico C. Atienza, and consular officials of Brunei and Thailand.
Ming Pao ranks third in circulation among Chinese-language dailies in Hong Kong, but it is said to be the top broadsheet as its two rivals are considered tabloids. Ming Pao is generally viewed to have left of center positions on issues.
It is also noted for its precise use of Chinese language, prompting many secondary schools in Hong Kong encourage their students to read Ming Pao to improve their Chinese language.
First established in 1959 by popular Chinese wuxia novelist Louis Cha, Ming Pao was taken over by Malaysian industrialist Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Hiew King, who also operates Sin Chew Daily and Guang Ming Daily, two of the major Chinese national dailies in Malaysia.
The three newspapers, run by the media groups Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad (Malaysia), Nanyang Press Holdings Berhad (Malaysia) and Ming Pao Enterprise Corporation Limited (Hong Kong), were merged into Media Chinese International Ltd, which is listed in the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad.
In the 1990s, Ming Pao established four overseas branches in North America: Toronto, Vancouver, New York and San Francisco.
