The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong celebrated Buwan ng Wika (National Language Month) with the Filipino community at the PCG Public Area on Sunday, 12 August 2018, with some 100 community leaders and representatives from various organizations in attendance.

Consul General Antonio A. Morales encouraged the attendees to revisit the Filipino language in keeping with this year’s theme “Filipino: Wika ng Saliksik” (Filipino: Language of Research), underscoring the need to encourage the use of the national language in works related to science, education, and media, among others.

He also reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to conduct programs and activities geared towards Hong Kong Filipino youth in order to help them reconnect to their roots and improve their grasp and appreciation of Filipino language and culture.

Out of no less than 223,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong, around 17,000 are residents and dependents, including children and minors below 18 years of age.

The program featured cultural performances by the staff of the Consulate singing three popular Filipino songs, the Federation of Luzon Active Groups (FLAG), with song renditions of Gary Granada’s “Tagumpay Nating Lahat”, and the Tinikling Group of Migrants with performances of regional folk dances “Binuyugan” and “Itik-Itik”.

One of the highlights of the program was a reading of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s “Sa Aking Mga Kababata” by Zachariah Oliver B. Sandoval, a young Filipino born and raised in Hong Kong.
