The event was held at CityU’s Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall, and was attended by members of the consular corps, academia and civil society.

During the event, CityU underscored the importance of training students based on the “One Health Concept” where human and animal health are interdependent with the ecosystem’s health.

The Naming Ceremony focused on public health, food safety, animal welfare and aquaculture for the well-being of the society.

CityU, through the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, offers Hong Kong’s first-ever veterinary degree. The University also aims to become an international hub for public health.

Focus on public health, with high degree of importance on prevention of transmission of diseases from animal to human, is of utmost importance to Hong Kong, given several avian flu scares experienced by the city. Hong Kong has prioritized public health awareness, especially following the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in the city in 2003.
