The Philippine Consulate General joined on 22 April 2018 the official rollout of the “Are You OK?” public education and community launching campaign at the Chater Garden in Hong Kong’s Central district.
The public education and community launching ceremony was opened by Professor Alfred Chan Cheung-Ming, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Deputy Consul General Roderico C. Atienza of the Philippine Consulate General, and Vice Consul Sholahudin of the Indonesian Consulate General.
“Our Consulate General is committed to safeguarding the rights of more our household service workers in Hong Kong, and has taken steps to further enhance their welfare and well-being,” Deputy Consul General Atienza said in remarks delivered on behalf of Consul General Morales. “I believe the campaign we are launching today fully complements the Consulate’s mandate for our workers in the Territory.”
The “Are You OK?” campaign is a project of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), International Organization for Migration (IOM) Hong Kong sub-office, Christian Action and RainLily, in partnership with the Philippine and Indonesian Consulates General.
It is a campaign addressing the needs of migrant domestic workers who may be victims of exploitation but have limited access to information and help. In particular, the project aimed to prevent sex discrimination and exploitation on migrant domestic workers by providing education on gender based violence, sex discrimination and labor exploitation.
The campaign started in January, where Philippine Consul General Antonio A. Morales delivered remarks at the first session of the ambassadors training. In the past three months, the campaign empowered over 60 migrant domestic workers, including Filipinos, through a series of trainings and outreach events.
The ceremony was graced with performances from Filipino and Indonesian dance and singing groups. The “Are You OK” ambassadors—the migrant workers that completed the training—were also given their certificates on stage.
The workshop was held under the auspices of the Philippine Consulate’s Gender and Development Program to Magna Carta of Women provisions on discrimination and sexual violence.
