Upon the invitation of South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong’s leading English-language daily, Philippine Consul General Antonio A. Morales attended as one of the VIP guests at the newspaper’s China Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Conference brought together 65 speakers from China and Southeast Asia to examine how the world’s second largest economy will conduct itself in the region. Over 1,110 participants from the government, academia, business, media and other sectors participated in the event.

Issues such as China’s escalating trade war with the US, economic growth in Southeast Asia, and China’s investments in the region were discussed by renowned speakers in the international scene such as Alibaba’s Jack Ma, former Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, and Malaysian businessman Tan Sri Dato Dr. Francis Yeoh.

The China Conference in Kuala Lumpur was the first China Conference organized by SCMP outside of Hong Kong. The newspaper is considering a number of Southeast Asian capitals, including Manila, as the venue for next year’s event.

The Conference also served as an opportunity for Consul General Morales to make an intervention on the Philippines’ independent foreign policy under the administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

The SCMP-Hong Kong edition has shown great interest in the Philippines in its extensive coverage of the country’s political, economic, social and cultural developments as well as the lives of more than 220,000 Filipino residents in Hong Kong.
