Philippine Consul General Antonio A. Morales attended the regular informal gathering of Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Maycham) Hong Kong and Macau at the invitation of the chair, Dato' Seri Cheah Cheng Hye, one of Malaysia’s richest people, on 7 November 2018 at the Grand Ballroom of the JW Marriott Hong Kong.
Consul General Morales, who has previously been assigned to Malaysia in the early part of his career, renewed his acquaintances and made new friends at the Nasi Lemak Dinner Talk organized by the Maycham’s Trade & Industrial Subcommittee, featuring Clare Rewcastle Brown, a British journalist who spoke about her experience covering the 1MDB exposé.
Mr Cheah, who co-chairs Maycham with Dato’ Gan Khai Choon of Hong Leong International (Hong Kong) Ltd, is the Chairman and co-Chief Investment Officer of Value Partners Group, a Hong Kong-based company he co-founded in 1993 and publicly listed in 2007. He is one of the most prominent business figures and investors in Hong Kong.
Called the "Warren Buffett of the East", the Penang-born Mr Cheah is listed by Forbes magazine as the 38th richest person in Malaysia with a net worth of US$435 million. Value Partners itself has assets under management at US$17.2 billion as of 30 June 2018.
Before starting Value Partners, Mr Cheah worked at Morgan Greenfeld Group after serving as a financial journalist with the Asian Wall Street Journal and Far Eastern Economic Review, where he reported on business and financial news across East and Southeast Asia markets.
Maycham is an organization formed by Malaysians in Hong Kong and Macau in 2014 to promote commerce and trade between Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and Southern China by enhancing the capabilities and resources of the members through better interaction and networking.
The Nasi Lemak Dinner Talk is a regular event in Maycham’s calendar inviting guest speakers to address in an informal format the members and guests on current events and issues of the day, like a Kaffeeklatsch.
