The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Cebu City organized a two-day free group and one-on-one public legal consultation on 10-11 November 2018 at the Chancery Conference Room and Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) public area.
A delegation of 15 lawyers, led by IBP-Cebu City President Atty. Jose Glenn Capanas, participated in the seventh in the public service series “Idulog mo kay Atorni” (Consult Your Attorney). The series has run for four years in partnership with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).
Over 125 members of the Filipino community were served by IBP delegation during the two-day consultations. An informal survey based on the nature of the actual cases reveal that most of the problems of the Filipinos who sought advice and assistance revolved around marriage, custody and support, property, and loan issues.
For the forum, Atty. Mark Anthony P. Gaviola gave a lecture on Republic Act No. 9262 or the “Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.” Notably, Atty. Gaviola mentioned that failure of a father to support or to sufficiently support his or her child with a woman is considered “economic abuse,” and the complaining partner may duly file a criminal case against him.
During the Q&A portion of the forum, several audience members asked mostly about support for their children.
The project was held under the auspices of the Consulate’s Gender and Development (GAD) program, and spearheaded by the Assistance-to-Nationals and Civil Registry and Legal Sections.
