The Philippine Consulate General participated in an attempt by the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch (ISS-HK) on the occasion of its 60th anniversary to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most number of nationalities in a tai chi class on 18 November 2018.
Over 500 participants from 60 different nationalities, with Filipinos among the highest number of attendees, joined the event held at the Wan Chai Southorn Playground Football Pitch. The Consulate was represented by Vice Consul Fatima G. Quintin, who participated in the tai chi class along with officials from the consulates of Nigeria, Germany and Israel.
During the opening ceremony, ISS-HK Chairman C.P. Ho highlighted the organization’s quest for harmony in diversity, and in keeping the circle going to touch the lives of deprived migrants.
“This is the first ever that I come across 60 nationalities gathered in Wan Chai. This means Hong Kong is truly cosmopolitan – an open society, welcoming any nationality. We believe equalities for everybody, regardless of race, nationality or religion”, said Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Matthew Cheung Kin-chung in a speech on the occasion.
Chief Secretary Cheung further lauded ISS-HK’s contribution to providing welfare support for the underprivileged and disadvantaged in Hong Kong.
The organization has been commissioned by the Hong Kong Government to operate a number of programs for new arrivals from mainland China and ethnic minorities, including provision of assistance for non-refoulement claimants. Adrielle Pañares, a Filipino resident of Hong Kong, is ISS-HK’s Director for Migrants Programme.
ISS-HK has been a partner of the Consulate in providing capacity building initiatives for its personnel and the Filipino Community in Hong Kong, including Cantonese classes and client service workshops.
The event was also attended by ISS-HK Chief Executive Stephen Yau, President of Hong Kong Wushu Union Ian Fok, Chairman of Wan Chai District Council Stephen Ng, and the Wan Chai District Council Member Yolanda Ng. The Wan Chai District Council Cultural & Leisure Services Committee and Hong Kong Wushu Union co-organized the event.
