More than 600 Filipino living in Hong Kong took the Special Professional Licensure Examination (SPLE) for Professional Teachers administered by the Philippines’ Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General at a secondary school in Kowloon on 30 September 2018.

Consul General Antonio A. Morales visited the private Delia Memorial School (Matteo Ricci) in Kwun Tong District in Hong Kong with Labor Attaché Leonida V. Romulo and Deputy Consul General Roderico C. Atienza at the start of the daylong exam organized normally once a year in Hong Kong.

Gloria S. Varquez, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) officer in charge of exam applications, said 614 overseas Filipino workers sat for the exam this year, a third more than the 460 examinees in 2017. It was however not clear how many of the examinees are household service workers (HSWs), who comprise 90 percent of 230,000 Filipinos in HK.

324 examinees took the exams for primary schools and 292 took the exams for secondary schools. The results are expected to be released on 4 December 2018.

Applicants living in mainland China and Macau could also sit for the exam if they submit the required documents at the POLO in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island and pay the approximately HK$329.

Last year, there were 60 successful examinees. Any successful candidate can apply to the POLO for assistance to be placed as a teacher in a public school in their hometown in the Philippines under the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) “Sa ‘Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am at Sir” (SPIMS).

SPIMS is a migrant worker reintegration project of the DOLE with the PRC, Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), to provide opportunities for qualified teachers working overseas to practice their profession as teachers in their hometowns.
