The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, led by Consul General Antonio A. Morales and spouse, Mme. Shirlene C. Mananquil, joined the ASEAN Family Day at Tai O Fishing Village in the western coast of Lantau Island as part of efforts to celebrate friendship and maintain solidarity among ASEAN consulates general in the territory.
With Singapore as chair of ASEAN in 2018, the Singapore Consulate General organized the activity with nearly 70 representatives from all 10 ASEAN consulates general joining the daylong event.
The activity included a boat tour of the Tai O canal and an exclusive visit to the famous stilt houses of the village. ASEAN consulates general then toured the Tao O Heritage Hotel, a former police station which traces its history back to 1902. A sumptuous lunch featuring local delicacies was served to the ASEAN Family Day participants at the hotel.
The Philippine Consulate General organized a friendly ASEAN bowling tournament at the South China Athletic Association (SCAA) Bowling Centre in August 2017 to commemorate the regional grouping’s 50th anniversary. Prior to that, the Indonesian consul general hosted the ASEAN Family Day at their Consul General’s official residence in February 2016.
While not an ASEAN dialogue partner country, Hong Kong is increasing its engagement of ASEAN especially after the signing in Manila in November 2017 of the ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement, which will be put into effect starting 1 January 2019.
