The training program for life-saving techniques launched by the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government and civil society partners, conducted its last session for the year for Filipino household service workers (HSWs) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on 2 December 2018.
The Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) and Empower U (formerly Domestic Workers Empowerment Project) joined Consulate officials at the last session of the “Sagip Kapwa, Press to Shock - Save a Life Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training” at the HKU Meng Wah Complex Theatre 2.
Dr. Michael Manio, Founder of Empower U, welcomed the session participants, while Mr. Roger Cheung, FSD Contract Ambulance Services Officer, supervised the training conducted by the FSD team. Representing the Consulate, Vice Consul Fatima G. Quintin thanked FSD and Empower U for their partnership in making the initiative a success for Filipino HSWs in HK.
She also underscored the point made by Consul General Antonio A. Morales during the program launch that, as carers and first responders in many households in Hong Kong, with the proper first aid training, each one of the now 208,000 HSWs is a potential life saver.
FSD handed certificates to close to 50 participants at the end of the training session. Since its launch in July 2018, the Hong Kong Fire Services Department has trained more than 500 HSWs on how to properly administer CPR and operate an AED.
The “Sagip Kapwa, Press to Shock – Save a Life & Fire Safety Ambassador Training Programme” was launched on 8 July 2018 at the Sheung Wan Fire Services Station, and is one of the Consulate’s projects under the auspices of its Gender and Development (GAD) Program.
Due to the project’s success, it will continue next year with training sessions from January to June 2019.
