Fifty-five Filipino women migrant workers participated in an event organized and sponsored by the Philippine Consulate General in partnership with the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation (HKBCF) to promote breast health and wellness at the HKBCF’s Breast Health Centre in Ngau Chi Wan, Kowloon.
Now on its eighth year, the project offered free breast screening, mammogram services and a talk on breast health to the members of the Filipino community in Hong Kong, who currently number 230,000, more than 9 out of 10 of whom are women.
Consul General Antonio A. Morales led the Consulate team, while the HKBCF was represented by Ms. Grace Chung, Senior Health Service Officer and Head of HKBCF’s Breast Health Centre.
During the breast health talk, Ms. Chung discussed symptoms, statistics, and risk factors of breast cancer, as well as how to conduct self-examination and breast cancer treatment, during the talk on breast health.
“We must take care of our health in order for us to be productive and to contribute more to the society and to the community,” advocated Consul General Morales during his welcome remarks at the talk on breast health.
Health and wellness, especially among Filipino workers, is one of Consul General Morales’ priority initiatives as head of post. Based on the Consulate’s statistics, breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Filipinos in Hong Kong.
Consul General Morales also thanked HKBCF for its continued partnership and support in providing OFWs in Hong Kong access to free health services.
This event was held under the auspices of the Consulate’s gender and development (GAD) program.
