The Philippine Consulate General, in cooperation with the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation (HKBCF), organized and sponsored a free breast cancer screening session, mammogram services and seminar on breast health at the Consulate Chancery.

This is the second session under its 2019 breast health program of OFWs. The first session was held on 17 February 2019 at HKBCF's Breast Health Centre in Ngau Chi Wan, Kowloon.

In his opening remarks, Consul General Raly L. Tejada mentioned the aim of this project – prevention and early detection of breast cancer among members of the Filipino Community in Hong Kong, majority of which are female. He also thanked the HKBCF for its continuous efforts in providing free breast examination and mammogram services for the OFWs in Hong Kong.

A total of 72 female household service workers (HSWs) were examined from the November session, 63 of which were given referral for free mammogram services, bringing the total to more than 120 women OFWs receiving free breast health screening for 2019. Mammogram usually costs more than HKD 1,000 for those patients with HKBCF referral.

The HKBCF was represented by Ms. Grace Chung, Head of Breast Health Centre, Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation; Ms. Nicole Ying, Senior Health Service Officer; Ms. Cherrie Chen, Health Service Officer; Ms. Alice Yeung, Executive Officer; Ms. Jennifer Tang, Health services Assistant, and Ms. Priscilla Chan, Health services Assistant.

Ms. Nicole Ying conducted the breast health talk where she discussed symptoms, statistics, and risk factors of breast cancer, as well as how to conduct self-examination and breast cancer treatment. She emphasized the importance of early detection of breast cancer in saving lives.

The event was organized by the Consulate’s Gender and Development (GAD) Section on the occasion of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
